Pilates for beginners: what to expect in your first class

Updated May 29, 2026

Your first Pilates class is about learning the basics — breathing, alignment, and how the equipment works — at a manageable pace. Wear comfortable, fitted clothing and grippy socks, arrive a few minutes early, and tell your instructor about any injuries. A good studio scales everything to you.

What should you wear to Pilates?

Wear comfortable, fitted activewear that moves with you (loose clothing makes it harder for the instructor to see alignment) and grippy socks for the reformer. Bring water; we provide the equipment.

What happens in a first class?

Expect a welcome and a quick rundown of the equipment, then foundational work on breathing, core engagement, and alignment. The pace is controlled and precise rather than fast — quality of movement is the point.

How do you start at Pilates Forever?

New students begin with a 30-minute intro class — a small-group session designed to introduce the studio and the equipment. It's on us, and no card is required to book it.

Common questions

Do I need to be fit or flexible to start Pilates?
No. Pilates is scalable to any level, and a beginner-friendly studio will modify every exercise to your body. Flexibility and strength build over time.
